On a Sunday I stood alone on an embankment between the land and the sea. The sky was dark, the wind cold, and the sea rough. Amid these threatening elements I stood quite still, intrigued not only by them but also by the structure that my feet where touching: a black substance made of tar. It seemed simultaneously flowing and organic, solid and sharp, an impenetrable mass. But strangely beautiful. For me the structure under my feet became a world of its own. One that embodied isolation, threat and chaos. These elements became the main source for my drawings.

The sounds and traces of the land slowly disappear into the dark mass of the water. The water forms a free space between defined places. It is an entity that has an endlessly changing presence. It is never constant. It is always moving. In my drawings I become submerged in it and move with it, through its different appearances as it travels from one place to another.
