The work that I presented at the graduation exhibition at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie entitled ‘The Fragility of Coherence’. Coherence being what we consider normal, everyday, a given, the basic elements, rituals, activities and patterns that define our ordinary day- to- day life. We belief them to be coherent as they are build on set historical, cultural and scientific systems. However, they are not as set as we would like to think they are. They are susceptible to many different levels of change. They harbour an extreme fragility. Different situations and triggers from inside or outside of our selves can expose this fragility. Sometimes silent and masked and at other times compelling and tragic. In my work I try to activate the ambiguous tension field that exists between this coherence and fragility. Visually I do this by constantly transforming the same black and white image of a dining table set for a home dinner. The transition that is set up from the one image to the next is reminiscent of the social aspect that a table harbours where each social gathering, each situation and each moment is different. Each change, each different layer suggests different levels of meaning.
